The Hierophant

The Hierophant, sometimes known as “The Pope” represents education. It is no wonder I pulled this card today, the day I return to my role as an educator after a long holiday break. This card reminds me that the intellectual traditions of my past are just one way to define what an education means. In my role, I often remind my students of the importance of holding a beginner’s mind and the role curiosity plays in one’s education. So often, the students become overly preoccupied with the superficial ideas associated with a traditional education like “doing it right” or getting an “A” on an assignment. But this card reminds me to remind them that although traditional structures of education can be valuable and serve to ground us in the process of learning, it is just as valuable to find one’s own way of understanding and to come to conclusions that are rooted in one’s own self-awareness.
